Step into the mountains
Sometimes it doesn’t take much: good shoes, fresh mountain air and a route that matches your pace. In Saalfelden Leogang, the range goes from relaxed to high alpine, from mindful to panoramic. That’s exactly what makes the region so special. These seven tours showcase summer at its very best.
1. Tour to the Steinalm
This tour is perfect for anyone who likes to combine movement with a great place to stop for a bite. The trail leads through forests and across alpine meadows up to the newly built Steinalm, accompanied by wide views of the Steinernes Meer plateau and the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range. At the top, regional specialties, homemade cakes and that satisfying feeling of having earned your break are waiting.
2. Forest bathing on the Asitz
On the Asitz, hiking can slow down quite intentionally. The forest bathing trail invites you to take things at a gentler pace, breathe deeply and experience nature with all your senses. Natural stations offer subtle impulses without taking centre stage. If you prefer an easy option, take the cable cars up and enjoy a relaxed walk back down into the valley. If you’re looking for more activity, simply start from the bottom.
3. Nature & Climate in Transition hike
This guided hike to the Birnbachloch combines movement with fascinating insights into how alpine nature is changing. Following the traces of ice, water and climate, you’ll see how landscapes evolve over time. If you prefer to explore independently, you can also discover Central Europe’s lowest glacier at your own pace.
4. Hike to the Riemannhaus
The Steinernes Meer plateau reveals its most impressive side on the way to the Riemannhaus. This high alpine tour requires stamina, sure-footedness, a head for heights and good preparation. Those who meet these requirements are rewarded with a striking mountain landscape and a destination that leaves you wanting more.
5. Pirzbichl trail
Prefer something more leisurely but still want beautiful views? Then the Pirzbichl trail is just right. This easy hike with around 150 metres of elevation gain leads from the Sonnrain leisure centre via the Pirzbichl to Hütten and back along the Leoganger Ache. A tour that perfectly combines relaxed walking with scenic variety.
6. Hermitage
This hike gets straight to the point. Over just 700 metres, you’ll climb 180 metres in elevation – ideal for anyone who likes it short and punchy. At the top, the view opens up over the Saalfelden basin, the Hohe Tauern and the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range. A short tour with a surprisingly big finale.
7. Pinzga Hatscha
If you’re looking for more than just a single tour, the Pinzga Hatscha is worth considering. This long-distance hike leads through several regions over 15 stages, including Saalfelden Leogang, Saalbach Hinterglemm, the Salzburger Saalachtal, Hochkönig, Viehhofen and Maishofen. The best part: individual stages can easily be planned and combined with public transport or cable cars.
Coolcation tip:
After a day in the mountains, a sweet kind of refreshment is always welcome. Our tip: Misssi Eis. Ice cream made from natural ingredients and organic milk from the region - perfect for a short break after your hike and a great way to end a summer day outdoors.
