The countdown is on: in just 11 days, on August 21, the Jazzfestival Saalfelden 2025 will begin – a place where musical boundaries blur, and fans of contemporary music and sonic innovation gather in the alpine surroundings of Saalfelden Leogang. For four days, the town at the mountain range “Steinernes Meer” will transform for the 45th time into a vibrant hub for contemporary jazz, improvisation, and sonic art. We’re getting you in the mood with two exclusive artist interviews. In the spotlight: Danish guitarist and composer Teis Semey, and the Austrian ensemble Chez Fria, with Ferdinand Rauchmann and Paul Widauer offering insights into their creative process. Artistic Perspectives: Teis Semey and Chez Fria in Interview Teis Semey Guitarist and composer Teis Semey is no stranger to Saalfelden and will be performing several times during this year’s festival – including on the mainstage at the Congress with his Amsterdam-based large ensemble EN MASSE! Merging free jazz, punk riffs, and atmospheric density, the group strikes an impressive balance between chaos and tenderness, raw energy and deep concentration. At the bookbindery Fuchs, Semey teams up with Estonian pianist Kirke Karja. As part of the trio Raw Fish, he explores raw, spontaneous compositions. He’ll also close out the festival with an energetic Late Night Session featuring, among others, Christian Lillinger and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten – delivering improvisation that is free, direct, and close to the audience. In the interview, Semey speaks about music as an artistic expression rooted in community, empathy, and collective energy. Interview: LINK Chez Fria Taking a completely different approach is the five-piece ensemble Chez Fria. Represented in the interview by Ferdinand Rauchmann and Paul Widauer, they reflect on their artistic identity that navigates the space between structure and freedom. Their current project “Die Kunst dem Fuge” (= The Art of him Fugue) merges parallel musical worlds: Hildegard von Bingen, Bach, Webern, and contemporary club music. With synthesizer, trumpet, bass, recorder, and drums, they create an irreverent sonic fabric that balances humor, modernity, and musical reference traditions with precision. Their work is defined by interplay and a conscious focus on timbre – making Chez Fria an exciting representative of Austria’s young jazz scene. Interview: LINK New Value Creation Study: Jazz as a Regional Economic Driver That the Jazzfestival Saalfelden plays an important role not only musically but also economically is confirmed by the latest value creation study from the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce (WKS). According to the study, the festival draws around 17,000 visitors annually, generating significant economic impact in the region. The report highlights positive effects on the hospitality, gastronomy, and retail sectors, as well as enhanced image benefits for Saalfelden as a cultural and tourism destination. Behind the Beats – Guided Tour for Children & Teens A special program is designed for the youngest festival fans: the free guided tour Behind the Beats offers children and teens an exciting behind-the-scenes look at the festival on Saturday, August 23 at 12:00 (noon). How does a concert work from a technical perspective? Who ensures that sound and lighting come together perfectly at just the right moment? The meeting point is the Saalfelden Tourism Office – no registration required.

According to a recent value creation study by the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce (WKS = Wirtschaftskammer Salzburg), the Jazzfestival Saalfelden delivers significant economic benefits and serves as a major driver for the region. From 21 to 24 August 2025, the 45th edition of the Jazzfestival Saalfelden will take place, featuring a total of 184 musicians from 26 countries. Last year, the four-day festival attracted around 17,000 enthusiastic visitors - many attending multiple events - across its wide variety of venues. “The artistic quality of the Jazzfestival is well known. What had remained unclear until now was the festival’s specific economic impact on the region and Austria as a whole,” says Marco Pointner, festival organiser and tourism director of Saalfelden. Thanks to a recent value creation analysis by the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce based on the 2024 edition, there are now reliable figures highlighting the festival's economic contribution: • € 5.3 million in value creation across Austria, including € 4.2 million in Salzburg • 75 full-time jobs in Austria, of which 69 are based in Salzburg • € 2 million in taxes and levies The calculations were based on visitor spending during the 2024 festival, gathered through online surveys and mobile data analysis. On average, guests spent € 208 per day (including concert tickets). “With total expenditures amounting to around € 6.2 million, the festival not only creates beautiful sounds on stage but also rings the tills of businesses across multiple sectors,” says Christoph Fuchs, Head of Economic and Location Policy at WKS, pleased by the economic boost for the region. “The largest share of daily spending - € 134 - went to accommodation and gastronomy. Visitors also found time to shop, spending an average of € 33 per day.” “These figures make it clear: the Jazzfestival is not only a cultural beacon, but also a powerful economic engine for the region and beyond. Public and private investments in the event clearly pay off from an economic perspective,” Pointner continues. “Tax revenues including social contributions alone amount to € 2 million annually!” Daniela Neumayer, the festival’s production manager, adds: “An event of this scale wouldn’t be possible without a dedicated team. The study also shows that the festival secures or creates 75 jobs directly or indirectly - many of them right here in the Saalfelden region.” Festival Guests from All Across Europe The Jazzfestival Saalfelden is not only popular with locals from Salzburg, who account for the largest share of visitors at around 34%. They are followed by guests from Vienna (11%) and neighbouring Bavaria (10%). The festival also attracts visitors from Hungary, Norway, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia. More than half of the attendees use tourist accommodation - on average for five days. Most bookings are made for two people and four nights. A remarkable 82% of guests attended the festival due to the high artistic quality of the concerts. The unique atmosphere was also a key reason, cited by nearly half of respondents. The festival also serves as a meeting point for friends and acquaintances - 41% mentioned this as a motivation for their visit. Additionally, 11% attended the festival as part of a holiday and 6% came at the invitation of others. “In Salzburg, culture and the economy often go hand in hand, benefiting both,” says Fuchs. “Over 90% of the employment effects and nearly 80% of the value creation remain in the province of Salzburg. The Jazzfestival Saalfelden is not just a cultural highlight - it’s an economic one too!” Image (from left to right): Marco Pointner, organiser of the Jazzfestival Saalfelden; Daniela Neumayer, production manager of the Jazzfestival Saalfelden; Vanessa Kahn and Christoph Fuchs from Salzburg Chamber of Commerce (WKS) Photo credit: WKS/Kolarik

Over the past few weeks, we have sparked curiosity with selected program highlights – and now we are thrilled to present the full line-up for the 45th edition of the Jazzfestival Saalfelden: From August 21 to 24, a weekend full of surprises, experimentation, and inspiring encounters awaits you, featuring 184 artists from 26 nations. In addition to popular formats such as the already sold-out "We Hike Jazz" hike led by bassist Lukas Kranzelbinder, the experimental “Shortcuts”, and the free "City Tracks" throughout town, visitors can also look forward to more unique concert locations. A highlight remains the concert hike to the atmospheric 17th-century hermitage high above Schloss Lichtenberg – a magical place that captivated audiences last year and will again be an integral part of the festival in 2025. Just last month, Jazzfestival Saalfelden received the EJN Programming Award 2025 – a recognition of its artistic vision rooted in a commitment to experimentation and innovation. This award is not only praise for achievements so far but also a mandate to keep going – to continue exploring where music transcends boundaries, surprises, and opens new spaces. A central feature of the festival continues to be the support of new projects and constellations, many of which have their world premiere here. Pioneers of Improvised Music – Sonic Exploration on the Mainstage The sonic exploration on the Mainstage will be kicked off by the creative mind Leonhard Skorupa. Known for his projects Sketchbook Orchestra, AHL6, and the ensemble Kuhle Wampe – and celebrated as the “young rebel of Austrian jazz” (Ö1) – Skorupa brings an original commissioned work to its world premiere with an all-star line-up featuring Silke Eberhard, Kirke Karja, Robert Landfermann, and Leif Berger – a transnational sound project bridging Austria, Germany, and Estonia. Also embarking on unconventional paths is Kalle Kalima under the fitting title “Detour.” As part of his "Carte Blanche," the Finnish guitarist meets Argentinian keyboardist Leo Genovese and German drummer Christian Lillinger. This high-energy encounter unites three strong musical voices, moving between structure and spontaneity, composition and free form. Premieres, Perspectives, and Personalities Tomoki Sanders, child of jazz legend Pharoah Sanders, will give their eagerly anticipated European debut in Saalfelden. Drawing on African American and Japanese roots, Tomoki’s music blends elements of Great Black Music, electronic, and avant-garde. After years performing with Kassa Overall and various other projects, Tomoki now presents – for the first time live – music from an album announced for 2026, alongside an impressive band. Another special event marks the European premiere of an extraordinary quartet: Reid Anderson and Dave King (both founding members of The Bad Plus) meet Chris Potter and Craig Taborn. Their focus lies on the music of Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet – not as a nostalgic tribute, but as a forward-looking exploration of a musical state of mind. Patricia Brennan (vibraphone/marimba, Mexico/USA), one of today’s most distinctive voices, will perform in Saalfelden with her acclaimed septet project “Breaking Stretch” on the Mainstage, joined by musicians such as Jon Irabagon, Adam O’Farrill, and Dan Weiss. Brennan will also appear in a trio set as part of the Shortcuts series. Open Spaces – Encounters and Premieres The festival remains in 2025 a playground for musical encounters: Teis Semey meets Kirke Karja in an improvised session at the bookbindery Fuchs, and performs with his large-scale project “EN MASSE!” on the Mainstage. Laura Jurd not only presents her new album but also performs in two unusual duo formations – once at the hermitage with Jon Irabagon, and again in the forest with Nicolas Leirtrø. Many other constellations will celebrate premieres, exploring the vibrant space between improvisation and composition. Of course, Saalfelden also provides a stage for Austrian musicians: Chez Fria, “Nothing Causes Anything” by Vincent Pongracz, Lukas König in duo with Kasho Chualan, Alfred Vogel with the BEZAU BEATZ Orchestra of Good Hope, as well as in the trio “Eyes to the Sun” with Leo Genovese and Camila Nebbia. “Der kürzeste Weg” (eng.:The Shortest Way) at the Jazzfestival Saalfelden – Making Memory Audible The project “Der kürzeste Weg” (eng.: The Shortest Way) by Rosa Andraschek and Simon Nagy tells the story of Karl Reinthaler, a railway worker who resisted the Nazi regime. Five permanent audio stations in public spaces throughout Saalfelden recount his story, while a sixth station in the park Urslaupark features a composition by Lukas Kranzelbinder and Sun-Mi Hong – a sound memorial dedicated to ten other resistance fighters. During the festival, this piece will be performed live on three days by Kranzelbinder, Hong, and other bass-drum duos – exclusively at the bookbindery Fuchs. Audience Talk: Friday, August 22, 11:30 a.m., bookbindery Fuchs With Lukas Kranzelbinder, Rosa Andraschek, Simon Nagy Moderation: Hildegard Fraueneder
For three days, Saalfelden Leogang was the center of the international mountain biking scene: From 6 to 8 June 2025, Austria’s largest bike region Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, once again transformed into a hotspot for the sport, emotions, and community during the WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series. With 22,000 enthusiastic spectators, around 800 athletes from 40 nations, 350 volunteers, and an extensive supporting program, the World Cup weekend became an unforgettable highlight of the international racing season. Records, fulfilled dreams, and a little happy ending for Austria Friday evening already made history at the EPIC Bikepark Leogang: American Christopher Blevins (SPECIALIZED FACTORY RACING) secured his fourth consecutive UCI Cross-Country Short Track World Cup victory — a feat no one had achieved before. In the women's competition, Puck Pieterse (ALPECIN-DECEUNINCK) from the Netherlands laid the foundation for her first double win in the Cross-Country Short Track (XCC) and Olympic (XCO) World Cups. She sealed this with an impressive performance in the long-distance race on Sunday. Pieterse is now the eighth woman in the UCI Cross-Country World Cup to have achieved this. Such a double win in Saalfelden Leogang was denied to Christopher Blevins: The men’s XCO victory went to the Czech cross-country veteran Ondrej Cink (CUBE FACTORY RACING), whose dream of a World Cup victory came true after 16 years in the racing circuit. At the UCI Downhill World Cup on Saturday, the Canadian duo Gracey Hemstreet (NORCO RACE DIVISION) and Jackson Goldstone (SANTA CRUZ SYNDICATE) proved unbeatable. While Jackson Goldstone set a new course record and narrowly beat reigning overall World Cup winner Loic Bruni (SPECIALIZED GRAVITY) from France by a few hundredths of a second, Gracey Hemstreet’s confident and technically flawless performance dashed local favorite Vali Höll’s (YT MOB) hopes for a third consecutive home victory. A win in front of the home crowd was only granted this year to Rosa Zierl, who brought a small happy ending with her victory in the junior women’s competition. In Austria’s largest bike region Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, the Enduro athletes faced six stages covering 66.8 kilometers of challenging terrain. In changing weather conditions, the British Ella Conolly and Canadian Jesse Melamed (CANYON CLLCTV FACTORY TEAM) took the victories. Top-level sport meets festival atmosphere Besides breathtaking races, the weekend offered an impressive range of experiences: from Red Bull helicopter flight shows and film screenings to an expo area featuring numerous top brands, there was a program for the whole family. The fusion of elite sport and festival character created a unique atmosphere in the Pinzgau region. “We didn’t just want to showcase sporting excellence, but to create a lively overall experience for the World Cup — and we succeeded beyond expectations,” said Kornel Grundner, Managing Director of Leoganger Bergbahnen. “The atmosphere along the course was electrifying, and even off the racing action it was clear: the Mountain Bike World Cup is an event for everyone.” Teams and athletes were also enthusiastic about the atmosphere and the host destination. “I really enjoyed it. I Love this place. It’s awesome – I mean it’s beautiful and I’ve spent a little bit of time here in the region outside of races – so I really like it here,” said Christopher Blevins after his XCC victory on Friday. Fabien Barel, team manager of the CANYON CLLCTV FACTORY TEAM, who was delighted by the first podium of young gun Henri Kiefer from Germany, echoed this sentiment: “Leogang is always a fantastic venue where we really get to experience the full atmosphere around the race itself. The resort is incredibly welcoming, with excellent facilities, and the track's accessibility is outstanding. On top of that, we have a wealth of data and experience from previous years, which allows us to build on proven knowledge year after year – helping us optimize both the show and the speed. And above all, there are the fans – the atmosphere with the crowd is amazing. No matter the weather, we know they'll be there, creating a great vibe and making it a fantastic experience for everyone." Looking ahead With the successful World Cup weekend, Saalfelden Leogang has once again proven that it is one of the leading destinations on the international mountain biking calendar. Plans for the coming years are already underway — because one thing is clear: Mountain biking has not only found a home in the region but also a loyal audience.
Saalfelden Leogang is happy to have welcomed more than 22,000 visitors for the UCI world cup weekend. Puck Pieterse finishes the perfect weekend in Leogang Dutch Puck Pieterse (ALPECIN-DECEUNINCK) looked to make it a double by taking both the cross country short track and Olympic wins here in Austria. Like in the short track though, she wouldn’t have it easy, with both Kiwi Samara Maxwell (DECATHLON FORD RACING TEAM) and Nicole Koller (GHOST FACTORY RACING) on form. Local hero Mona Mitterwallner (MONDRAKER FACTORY RACING) would be buoyed by her short track performance and would be one to watch here, too. The 3.6km course in and out EPIC Bikepark Leogang featured 168m of ascent, but in Saalfelden Leogang, the climbs are fierce punches, while the descents are technical with plenty of rock and root to keep the riders focused. The downpour that arrived for the U23 races left the course very wet indeed and the rain returned at the top of the first climb on lap one. Puck Pieterse would move ahead of French Loana Lecomte (BMC FACTORY RACING) in the early stages of lap one and would lead the race from there. It was another classic display from the Dutch World Champion with the power on the climbs and skills on the descents allowing her to extend her lead on every lap. Second place Samara Maxwell (DECATHLON FORD RACING TEAM) would also build a gap between herself and Ramona Forcini (BIXS PERFORMANCE RACE TEAM) in third. Results XCO Elite Women Top 5: 1. Jolanda Neff (SUI | CANNONDALE FACTORY RACING) 1:28:20 5. Tamara Wiedmann (AUT | MONDRAKER FACTORY RACING XC) 1:28:20 "It's been a goal of mine to have the perfect weekend. I told myself to be patient, but I am not good at waiting. I decided to go for it on lap one and put myself in a situation where I had to push all the way through. Nobody had a perfect race today without unclipping or stumbling. I had some problems on the upper part of the track, but I knew others would make mistakes as well. It was nice to take my own lines. I couldn't see what others were doing but that can be a good thing." – Puck Pieterse “It was a really good race because you got to ride at your own pace once the gaps were established. I rode the B-line on the first lap because it was safer, but it just wasn't for me. I was happy to back myself and ride the A-lines. I loved the track, it's just awesome. Everyone keeps talking about the overall, but I am just here to enjoy it. I'm flossing on the podium and just having fun. If I lose the red jersey I have no regrets. I have never been in this position, I didn't expect to be here, so it's an advantage for me. My team is just living every moment as well. We don't talk about trying to fight for the jersey, just about doing the best we can. If you do start thinking about the points, you start riding defensive, right? Live in the moment, no regrets, full send all the time. Grip it and rip it.“ – Samara Maxwell "I had a pretty decent start and was fighting for the top five by the third lap. I was feeling good. Normally I get stronger with each lap, so I was looking to attack. I hit a rock, it was my fault but I didn't see the rock underneath the mud. It's disappointing that it happened at my home World Cup but that's racing. In Nové Město, Puck had a flat, today I had one. Hopefully we'll have it better in Val di Sole.” – Mona Mitterwallner Overall Standings XCO Elite Women Top 5: 1. Samara Maxwell (NZL | DECATHLON FORD RACING TEAM) 1022 Pts. 2. Ondrej Cink takes his maiden UCI World Cup win in Leogang The rain would ease and then stop for the Elite Men as the lights went green. A track churned up by three successive races causing issues early in the race, with a lot of big names getting caught in traffic. Christopher Blevins (SPECIALIZED FACTORY RACING) from the USA would look to take the double for the third time this year. His teammate and winner of the opening round in Brazil, French Victor Koretzky, would not complete the race. The flying American, having only dropped a single position so far this year would not have it all his own way. The pace and conditions completely different to the opening three rounds. The track developed through the race, with plenty of crashes as the riders pushed hard with the mud started to dry with the course slowing as a result. The front of the pack therefore looked very different to previous race weekends. Veteran Czech rider Ondrej Cink (CUBE FACTORY RACING) would come out swinging and pushing to the front early. He extended his lead as the laps went by to take his first UCI World Cup win at the age of 34 becoming the second oldest Elite Men’s UCI World Cup winner behind Ned Overend. Swiss Mathias Flückiger (THÖMUS MAXON) would attack privateer rider Fabio Püntener at the start of the final lap, finishing just ahead of his compatriot. Results XCO Elite Men Top 5: 1. Lars Forster (SUI | THÖMUS MAXON) 1:26:18 "I am super happy because I have been waiting a long time for this, being second place so many times. I really like this place, I was U23 World Champion here. More than few times I thought my career was over because I am one of the oldest here, so I have no words... This course suits me but not the conditions so much. I don't know what happened, I just did it. I finally had a good start and I knew I had to be at the front on the first downhill as I knew the other guys were faster than me there. I just ran with my tactics and it went perfectly. Two laps to go I started to struggle but seeing that I had opened a gap gave me some extra power, so I pushed to the limit." – Ondrej Cink "I didn't have the confidence to attack on that last lap as I was completely on the limit. I know Fabio is in really good form, maybe the form of his life. I tried anyway and it worked. It was the first battle we have had together and so far this season he's been stronger. I really enjoyed racing with him today. I am really happy for him with the off-season team issues, now he's a privateer. I like this track, it suits me. I like the steep climbs and descents especially in these conditions." – Mathias Flückiger Overall Standings XCO Elite Men Top 5: 1. Christopher Blevins (USA | SPECIALIZED FACTORY RACING) 1092 Pts. 2. Ella Connolly makes it three from four in Leogang British Ella Connolly aimed to double up on her maiden victory from Loudenvielle especially with Morgane Charre (PIVOT FACTORY RACING) crashing out in practice. The Elite Women would head out to race just as the heaviest rain arrived in Leogang. With six stages totalling just under 67km there was plenty of time on track across Austria’s largest bike region Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn for everything to change. Ella Connolly would cross the line in first place some 16.379 seconds up on silver medallist Simona Kuchynkova (CUBE ACTION TEAM) pipping Winni Goldsbury who finished third.
