Even without tackling steep slopes, visitors can enjoy an activity-filled winter holiday in Saalfelden Leogang. The region, with its 130 kilometres of cross-country trails and the Nordic Park Saalfelden by lake Ritzensee, is a paradise for cross-country skiing enthusiasts. There’s also a wide variety of ski tours, snowshoe and winter hikes, kilometres of toboggan runs and the chance to go ice skating on the frozen lake Ritzensee. And for those who prefer a more leisurely pace, a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snowy landscape is the perfect choice. Nordic Park Saalfelden: On skis around lake Ritzensee – first Biathlon experiences The Nordic Park Saalfelden by lake Ritzensee is home to cross-country skiers and the starting point for the region's 130-kilometre network of cross-country skiing trails. All degrees of difficulty are catered for here. Best of all, beginners and experts will feel equally at home. Those who want to try their hand at biathlon can book a taster course, which is available for both children and adults. The Nordic Park represents true variety: in addition to cross-country skiing, guests can also enjoy winter hiking, ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides and tobogganing. Mark Hauser, teacher at the Saalfelden Nordic Ski Middle School and cross-country and biathlon coach, explains the park’s appeal: “As a father of two daughters, it’s important to me that my kids enjoy cross-country skiing. In the Nordic Park Saalfelden, with its waves, small jumps and banked turns, they do just that. They learn cross-country skiing playfully and improve their coordination in the beautiful winter landscape of Saalfelden Leogang.” A special highlight is an evening tour on the 1.4-kilometre trail around lake Ritzensee and on the floodlit trail in Leogang/Rosental, open until 9:00 p.m. The 5.3-kilometre Kollingwald trail offers a medium level of difficulty, while experienced skiers can test their skills on the World Cup trail, where several World Cups and two Junior World Championships have already been held. Family fun with Quiz Rally and Fun & Snow Park Families will find two especially popular attractions at the Nordic Park Saalfelden. In the Fun & Snow Park, children and adults alike can try their hand at cross-country skiing. More experienced skiers can take on banked turns, small jumps and a slalom course. A true family adventure awaits with the Nordic quiz rally: starting from the Nordic Park, participants ski around lake Ritzensee and solve seven riddles at seven stations. The answers are entered on a card, and those who find the correct solution word receive a small gift at the Saalfelden Tourist Office. Both the Fun & Snow Park course and the Nordic quiz rally are unique in all of Austria. The idea for the rally came from Mark Hauser: “Most children don’t want to just ski from A to B, but many do want to go all the way around lake Ritzensee. With the quiz rally, this route becomes child’s play – it keeps them entertained and motivated along the way.” Nordic Park Experience – A Green Event in a white winter landscape Nordic by Nature: on two winter days – 11 January and 15 February 2026 – the Nordic Park Experience returns to Saalfelden. Everything revolves around the Nordic lifestyle. Highlights include the Kids Winter Games, the Nordic quiz rally, a chill-out lounge, and DJ music to enjoy. Ice skating on lake Ritzensee adds to the fun – two days filled with variety and excitement. The Nordic Park Experience is organised as a Green Event Salzburg, meaning it is run as sustainably and environmentally friendly as possible. Food and beverages are sourced regionally, and waste is reduced to an absolute minimum. Fun beyond the slopes – winter hiking, ski touring, ice skating Whether on ice skates, toboggans or hiking boots – Saalfelden Leogang offers winter fun in every form. When lake Ritzensee is frozen, it transforms into a natural ice rink where skaters can glide freely – illuminated until 9 p.m. Those seeking unique experiences can join a moonlight ski tour on the Asitz (every Tuesday and Friday evening) or enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride through idyllic snowy landscapes. Winter hikers will find plenty of options: a short loop around lake Ritzensee offers beautiful views of the Steinernes Meer plateau and the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range, while the 11.8-kilometre Haidrunde trail leads along the lake and through the nearby Kollingwald forest. The forest swing along the route provides the perfect place to pause, relax, and enjoy the tranquillity of nature. Kilometres of tobogganing fun A thrilling toboggan ride is an absolute must during a winter holiday in Saalfelden Leogang. Take the Asitzbahn cable car (or hike) up to the day and night toboggan run on the Asitz. The track stretches for an impressive four kilometres, and every Tuesday and Friday from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., it’s open for floodlit tobogganing under a starry sky. The smaller but charming Sinnlehenalm run, located near the centre of Leogang, delights visitors with its breathtaking views of the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range. At the Sinnlehenalm, guests can also enjoy a variety of regional specialities. Golf Club Gut Brandlhof – Alpine views and glorious greens The Golf Club Gut Brandlhof features oohs and ahhhs and sometimes evening barks! For starters, the game is played against an impressive mountain backdrop, which is really quite extraordinary. But the course is also extremely dog-friendly. At the Golf Club Gut Brandlhof, four-legged friends are allowed to accompany their masters on the 18-hole course... for moral support of course. There is even a dedicated lounge area for them in the e-golf cart. The Golf Club Gut Brandlhof’s own course is challenging and versatile. You’ll have to hit the ball across the Saalach, a mountain river, up to six times. During your round, enjoy breathtaking views of the mountain giants of the Steinernes Meer plateau and the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range. The large driving range is partly covered and there is a training area for pitching, putting and bunker play. Led by golf professional Markus von Knoerzer, the PROject GOLFacademy at Golf Club Gut Brandlhof offers personalized training for golfers of all skill levels. By the way: Golfing is also possible in Saalfelden Leogang in wintertime! The Indoor Golf Performance Centre at the Gut Brandlhof hotel is open 365 days a year and features a golf simulator. The course has fairways that are sometimes long, hilly and tricky, peppered with water hazards, roughs, ponds and bunkers. Thanks to its superb location, every golf match is accompanied by sweeping 360-degree panoramic views of the Steinernes Meer plateau. The Urslautal Golf Academy and the Systema Golf Academy offer golf taster courses, private and group lessons (to achieve Platzreife certification), as well as training lessons for the whole family. "You've only really been where you've walked." Even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe appreciated the merits of hiking. Accordingly, he would have certainly loved Saalfelden Leogang, the most contrast-rich environment in the Alps. Here in the SalzburgerLand’s most beautiful and varied holiday region, there is a large network of hiking and running routes to discover. For example, the Pinzga‘ Hatscha long-distance trail, the Saalachtaler Höhenweg and the Saalachtal Circular Trail – all will treat you to magnificent views of the Steinernes Meer plateau and the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range. There are also countless worthwhile stops for hikers, including the spectacular TONspur islands, the Senses Park, the summer toboggan runs, or the Flying Fox XXL zip line! Forest bathing at the Asitz On this superlative trail, hikers immerse themselves in the forest environment: The aim of forest bathing, or Shinrin Yoku as it is called in Japan, is to relax in and amongst nature, to slow down, and to temporarily escape the stresses of daily life. The “forest bathing at the Asitz" hiking trail, which was open last summer, extends for 8.2 kilometres past 14 stations. It boasts viewpoints, resting stations, nature swings, a yoga area, and even a treetop bed. Forest bathing is an activity focussed entirely on the senses. It's about seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting the forest. This is how mindful hiking should be. NEW from July 2025: "Your time-out on the Mountain of Senses" – mindful hiking with Shinrin Yoku elements. Every Thursday in July, August and October, Maria Leutgeb – initiator of the "forest bathing at the Asitz" project, trained hiking guide and Shinrin Yoku expert – will lead a mindfulness day on the Mountain of Senses. "Simply hiking": pole sharing, tours for baby carriages and overnight stays in mountain huts In Saalfelden Leogang, the motto is "simply hiking”. No fuss. Just out into nature. "We want to avoid distractions and focus on what matters," says Marco Pointner, Managing Director of Saalfelden Leogang Tourism. "We want to encourage our guests to just start walking, to enjoy nature and to have fun. The focus is on hiking, pure and simple, as well as the ability to switch off from the concerns of everyday life." For those keen to take a short break, there are unobtrusive, regionally produced features along the trails, such as the 360-degree wooden benches and the wrought-iron forest swings. Another suggestion is "pole sharing:" At various selected trailheads in Saalfelden Leogang you find pole-sharing stations, where you can borrow wooden hiking poles, which you simply put back in the holders provided at the end of your hike. The region is also great for hiking with children: The Saalfelden Leogang holiday region features several hiking routes and paths that are also suitable for families with prams and small children. The not-too steep hike to the Sinnlehenalm mountain hut, for example, at an altitude of 950 metres, is easy to tackle. There is a new agricultural theme trail around the Ritzensee lake, which provides insights into the world of agriculture with the help of display boards. For a unique touch to your hike on the Steinernes Meer plateau or the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range, consider planning an overnight stay in a mountain hut. For example, in the Passauer Hütte, Peter-Wiechenthaler-Hütte or the newly renovated Riemannhaus mountain huts. Another exciting guided hike, titled “Nature and Climate in transition”, offers interesting insights into the changes affecting nature. This hike to the lowest glacier in Central Europe inspires discussion and gives hope. Earn badges in the hiking pass challenge As if a hike wasn't already beautiful enough, in Saalfelden Leogang all hard-working explorers on the diverse hiking trails can also earn a badge - a hiking pin in gold, silver or bronze. With a range of difficulty levels and route lengths, there are options to satisfy both seasoned mountaineers and casual hikers. The tours range from Leo’s Game Trail to the challenging ascent to the Sommerstein summit. The hiking pass is available at the tourist information offices, or you can simply use the SummitLynx app. Hiking without luggage: multi-day tours on the Saalachtaler Höhenweg and Saalachtal Circular Trail Those walking longer and further in Saalfelden Leogang need not bother with a heavy backpack. The reason: the “Hiking without Luggage” service. Hikers can set off with just a light daypack, while the larger piece of luggage is already transported ahead to the next stage location in the meantime. This service is available for both the Saalachtaler Höhenweg and Saalachtal Circular Trail. All-inclusive hiking packages for these two beautiful routes are also available: Six nights, including luggage transfer, a hiking map and a hiking equipment kit (consisting of hiking pin, hiking pole, and hiking socks) are included. Hikers along the Saalachtaler Höhenweg trail also receive a ticket for the cable car in Hinterglemm and one for the ride back to the valley using the Biberg summer toboggan run. This fantastic offer is available from 864 EUR per person. A similar package for the Saalachtal Circular Trail is available from 742 EUR per person (including the ticket for the ascent on the Huggenberg chairlift). The offers are bookable from the beginning of June until the end of September by visiting: https://www.saalfelden-leogang.com/en/region-experience/hiking/hiking-without-luggage Outstanding climbing in the Steinberge mountain sports region For pure climbing pleasure, look no further than the Steinberge mountains: The Steinberge mountain sports region, including Saalfelden Leogang, Pillerseetal and Salzburger Saalachtal, features over 1,000 climbing routes and Alpine multi-pitches for beginners, advanced and experienced climbers. The 45-pitch “Pinzgawurm route” is one of the longest climbing routes in the Northern Limestone Alps. You’ll also have access to five climbing gyms and twelve via ferratas. The indoor options are especially popular on a rainy day. At the "Felsenfest" climbing gym, Alpine climbers can hone their skills in the 1,700 square metre climbing area. It is one of the most modern and largest climbing gyms in Austria. The smaller Alpenverein climbing gym Leogang features a 50 m² bouldering room. Varied climbing programmes are also available from May to October as part of the “365 Days Active and Creative Programme” – also for families. After a strenuous climbing tour, don’t forget to reward yourself with some delicious food. A recommendation is to stop at one of the traditional mountain huts. Regional delicacies await in the Passauer Hütte, Riemannhaus and Peter-Wiechenthaler-Hütte mountain huts, among others. Nature cinema and the TONspur islands: relax, gaze into the distance, and listen to music Saalfelden Leogang’s beautiful nature always offers plenty to see and hear. For the eyes and ears, the region boasts two particularly extraordinary attractions. Firstly, there is the nature cinema on the Sonnkogel (Asitz) with its various panoramic plateaus. Hikers and visitors can take in the impressive vista of the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range and the Steinernes Meer plateau from loungers and hammocks. You can reach the nature cinema via the Asitzbahn or Steinbergbahn cable car, or via Leo’s Game Trail and the Grosser Asitz mountain. Meanwhile, the five TONspur islands are a delight for the ears. They constitute an archive of recordings from the previous year’s TONspur concerts, an annual series of concerts held on the Asitz in summer. Put your feet up and lean back on a wooden lounger, then immerse yourself in the music from the sound system. Raining outside? No problem. The loungers are mounted on rails and can be pulled out or into the covered station depending on the weather. In 2020 the TONspuren Islands were even awarded the MAECENAS Austrian Art Sponsorship Prize. Family fun on the Asitz: "Mountain of Senses" and “peaceful waters" The Asitz is known as the “Mountain of Senses" for good reason. At the Senses Park, located at the Asitzbahn middle station, mountain-lovers can see, hear, taste, smell and feel at 30 experience stations. The Asitz mountain is ideal for an adventurous outing with the whole family. What can guests expect? Walking barefoot on the soft Alpine soil, listening to the sounds of the forest, or enjoying the scent of the many wild herbs and Alpine plants. At the Senses Park, children can try their hands at many creative activities, from baking flatbread to painting, crafting and designing their own T-shirt. There is also plenty for little ones to enjoy at Leo’s Game Trail: Along the way, there are many exciting stops where the kids can climb, balance and burn off some energy. This year's puzzles will be particularly exciting, as the questions have been revised and a new prize awaits the children. If you’re keen to relax after a long day out (or just all day long), the “Stille Wasser (peaceful waters)” area on the Asitz features lounging chairs, panoramic terraces, a Kneipp-therapy area and a floating platform at the Speichersee reservoir – sit back and enjoy the view! The best part is that the region offers plenty of opportunities in autumn as well. The cable cars of the Leoganger Bergbahnen cable car company are open continuously until the start of the ski season, so that the region’s most colourful season can be enjoyed in all its glory. Tip: With the Saalfelden Leogang Card, which you receive automatically when you check in at partner accommodations, you can get your money's worth all year round. You also enjoy free admission to museums, swimming pools and much more. Adrenaline packed action: summer tobogganing and Flying Fox XXL zip line Even though the ski slopes are green meadows in summer, some places in Saalfelden Leogang are still fast-paced. The two summer toboggan runs promise plenty of thrills! The first is located on Saalfelden's Biberg mountain: the wild ride stretches over 1.6 kilometres and offers curves, jumps and a phenomenal view of the Saalfelden basin! The second, “Leo’s Sound Toboggan Run”, is located at an altitude of 1,800 metres on the Asitz mountain and even delights tobogganers with music on the way. Best of all: This year it's getting a makeover with a brand new sound and look. Adrenaline junkies should definitely try out one of the longest and fastest steel cable slides in the world: the Flying Fox XXL zip line, which starts at the Stöcklalm mountain hut in Leogang. At speeds of up to 130 kilometres per hour, rush through the air headfirst for 1,600 metres. A tip: At the Lindlalm mountain hut there is a truly special delicacy worth trying: the "Almwuzl" (a unique twist on Kaiserschmarren). For a relaxing break, there are stations along the hiking routes – such as the 360-degree wooden benches or the wrought-iron forest swings. You can borrow a hiking pole at the pole-sharing stations. Don't miss the nature cinema on the mountain peak of the Sonnkogel on the Asitz – a panoramic cinema with wooden lounging islands and plateaus with hammocks. Netflix can’t hold a candle to the incredible views of the majestic mountain range. You can reach the nature cinema with the Asitzbahn or Steinbergbahn cable cars, via Leo’s Game Trail, or from the Grosser Asitz mountain along the TONspur islands trail. A tip: Those wishing to walk longer and further in Saalfelden Leogang do not need to bother with a heavy backpack. The reason: the “Hiking without Luggage” service. Hikers can set off with just a light daypack, while the larger piece of luggage is already transported ahead to the next stopover in the meantime. An overnight stay in a mountain hut, for example in the Passauer Hütte, the Peter-Wiechenthaler-Hütte or the newly renovated Riemannhaus, is also a good idea. Ambitious hikers can also earn a badge with the Hiking Pass Challenge – a gold, silver or bronze hiking pin. The hiking pass is available at the tourist information offices, or you can simply use the SummitLynx app. The Steinberge mountain sports region: climbing trails, via ferratas and climbing gyms The Steinberge mountain sports region boast over 1,000 climbing routes and Alpine multi-pitch routes for beginners, advanced and experienced climbers. The mountain sports region boasts the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge mountains, the Pillerseetal valley and the Saalachtal valley in Salzburg, as well as the Steinplatte mountain. Amidst the breathtaking mountain scenery, there is a total of twelve via ferratas to choose from and five climbing gyms for poor weather days. The 45-pitch “Pinzgawurm route” is one of the longest climbing routes in the Northern Limestone Alps and a real challenge. Coolcation: The best places for holidaymakers to beat the heat On a hot summer's day, you need to cool off after a hike, bike ride or climb. Saalfelden Leogang has many beautiful places for this: For example, the Birnbachloch, a karstic spring near the Birnbach glacier or the Stoissengraben, through which the cool mountain water of the Buchweißbach flows, with a waterfall waiting at the end. And of course, the beautiful Ritzensee lake. On the Asitz mountain, the Stille Wasser (peaceful waters) area invites you to take a Kneipp dip, while the new forest bathing trail offers peace and relaxation in the shade of the forest with a focus on mindfulness. The dense forest along the trails also offers hikers and bikers natural protection from the summer heat and a soothing break in the midst of nature. Whether it's a refreshing glacier breeze, bubbling waterfalls or quiet forest bathing – Saalfelden Leogang is the ideal destination for a coolcation. However, this season, the bikepark, open from 9 May to 9 November 2025, is already featuring several new lines and trails. Popular existing routes have been refined, and brand-new ones have been introduced: All freeriders can look forward to the new red line, the "T-LINE," which connects Vali's Hölle and Bongo Bongo. The red line is accessed via the Flying Gangster or Speedster and ends after 1.3 kilometres at the Riders Playground at the Asitz valley station. Starting in summer 2025, a new blue line called "GATEWAY" will link the middle station of the Steinbergbahn cable car with the Steinberg Line by Fox. Spanning over 600 metres, this scenic trail will partly pass over wooden walkways, offering the perfect introduction to the bikepark. The new black singletrail “Back to the Roots” in the Steinberg Line by Fox area offers a more technically challenging experience. A 1.3-kilometre, natural singletrail that can be ridden from summer onwards. The popular Hangman I now features additional track variants in black and red, with one of them receiving its own unique name “Hangover." Both the black Hangman I bypass "Hangover" and the new black singletrail "Back to the Roots" were named by the community through an Instagram voting process. Mountain biking is no longer a male-dominated sport – more and more women are conquering the trails as well! Especially for this emerging group, the Epic Bikepark Leogang offers camps and workshops to improve riding skills, build confidence, and grow in a supportive community. One such project is the Hiking Trail of Arts on the Asitz, which is redesigned every year. The start of this beautiful forest trail to the Senses Park at the Asitzbahn middle station begins below the Asitzbahn mountain station. Every 30 to 40 metres there are works by the late artist Anton Thuswaldner. Artworks under the title "Weltbilder - Anton Thuswaldner in einer Retrospektive" will be on display from 1 June until mid-October. Another highlight of the FREIRAUM cultural association is the "Chamber Music in Hütten" at the Museum of Mining and Gothic Art in Leogang from 7 to 9 November 2025. A hike to the Saalfelden hermitage should not be missed. It is one of the last inhabited hermitages in Europe and also offers a fabulous view over Saalfelden Leogang. Summer solstice: A mystical Alpine spectacle featuring mountain fires Mountain bonfires at the summer solstice in June are an ancient tradition dating back to the 12th century.
