DIVERSE SUMMER EXPERIENCES IN SAALFELDEN LEOGANG - SUMMIT ADVENTURES, CULINARY DELIGHTS AND CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

2026, summer in Saalfelden Leogang is marked by two special anniversaries: the Epic Bikepark Leogang celebrates its 25th anniversary, and the historic Kirchenwirt celebrates its 700th birthday.

At the same time, the newly introduced Tour de Champions expands the diverse offering in Austria’s largest bike region Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, while the newly built hut Steinalm welcomes its first guests. And one thing remains certain: Saalfelden Leogang is a region made for enjoyment. Beautiful hiking trails and Austria’s largest bike region meet excellent cuisine and a vibrant cultural scene.

Epic Bikepark Leogang celebrates 25 years

For 25 years, the Epic Bikepark Leogang has been the heart of Austria’s largest bike region Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn. It is one of the most renowned bike parks in Europe and attracts fans from all over the world to Saalfelden Leogang. Naturally, the anniversary will be celebrated with a large jubilee festival from July 24 to 26, 2026. Fun fact: Vali Höll – multiple Downhill World Champion, overall World Cup winner and local hero – also celebrates her 25th birthday in 2026. The top rider is therefore the same age as the Epic Bikepark Leogang where a downhill line is named after her.

The Epic Bikepark Leogang season starts on May 8 and runs until November 8, 2026. Perfectly maintained lines and trails will once again be open for endless biking fun.

One highlight is the red line “T-LINE by GoPro”, located between Vali’s Hölle and Bongo Bongo. Riders enter via the Flying Gangster or Speedster trails and after 1.3 kilometres reach the Riders Playground at the valley station of the Leoganger Bergbahnen cable car company. Last year, the blue line “GATEWAY” was added. It connects the middle station of the Steinbergbahn cable car with the Steinberg Line. Over a distance of 600 metres, partly across wooden structures and beautifully integrated into the landscape, it provides the perfect introduction to the bikepark. A more technical challenge awaits riders on the black single trail “Back to the Roots” in the area of the Steinberg Line. The 1.3-kilometre natural trail, which opened last summer, offers a pure and demanding riding experience. The Epic Bikepark Leogang is ideal for professionals, beginners and kids alike. Beginners can start at the Riders Playground, a 30,000-square-metre practice area at the valley station of the Leoganger Bergbahnen cable car company. Here, riders can learn the correct riding technique, cornering and obstacle handling step by step.

Mountain biking is no longer a male-dominated sport. More and more women are conquering the trails. For them, the Epic Bikepark Leogang offers special camps and workshops to improve riding skills, build confidence and grow within a motivating community.

In summer, bikepark ticket prices are dynamic. With the Online Bike Bonus, riders have the chance to secure day or multi-day tickets at a lower price when booking early. It is now even easier to purchase tickets: simply buy the bike ticket at the best available price via the Mountainticket app, activate it and head straight through the turnstile to your favourite trails. Specialised bike hotels also ensure maximum comfort and an easy start to every biking day.

From 11 July to 30 August 2026, the new “Bike & Hike Xpress” bus will connect the Fieberbrunn cable cars and the Leoganger Bergbahnen cable car company for the first time. Whether for bikers switching between the trails in Fieberbrunn and the EPIC Bikepark Leogang, taking on the popular “The Challenge” route in Austria’s largest bike region, hikers exploring routes around the Asitz in Leogang and the Wildseeloder area in Fieberbrunn, or families discovering the Mountain of Senses and Timok’s Wild World, the new Xpress creates an attractive connection for everyone.

WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series and bike festival in Saalfelden Leogang

From June 11 to 14, 2026, the world’s best mountain bikers will once again compete in Saalfelden Leogang as part of the WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series. The competitions include Downhill, Cross-Country Olympic, Cross-Country Short Track and Enduro, promising spectacular races for spectators.

Another highlight is the renowned bike festival Saalfelden Leogang, taking place from October 2 to 4, 2026. Leading brands present their latest products and innovations, accompanied by a varied programme featuring workshops, guided tours from the BIKE Academy, festival parties, culinary highlights and exhibitions dedicated to mountain biking.

By the way: Since autumn 2023, Saalfelden Leogang has officially been recognised as a UCI Bike Region. This title is awarded by the international cycling federation to destinations that make an outstanding contribution to cycling.

Saalfelden Leogang is part of Austria’s largest bike region - New Tour de Champions for touring and E-mountain bikers

Together with Saalbach Hinterglemm and Fieberbrunn, Saalfelden Leogang forms Austria’s largest bike region. Riders can enjoy more than 120 kilometres of lines and trails, with 45 kilometres located in the Epic Bikepark Leogang alone, promising thrilling rides for all skill levels. The trails in Epic Bikepark Leogang are open daily from May 8 to November 8, 2026, and can easily be reached via the Asitzbahn cable car or the Steinbergbahn cable car. The varied network of routes is suitable for beginners, advanced riders and professionals alike. Natural single trails outside Epic Bikepark Leogang can, depending on weather conditions, already be ridden from April onwards.

New this summer is the Tour de Champions. The nine “places of champions” can be explored either as demanding day tours or as multi-day stages. The routes are especially designed for leisure riders, touring cyclists and E-mountain bikers. Along the way, they connect important sporting highlights of the region and allow visitors to experience historic and current competition venues in an interactive way.

Saalfelden Leogang offers mountain bikers, downhill professionals, leisure cyclists, gravel riders and e-bikers a dream holiday destination. The extensive network of tours allows gravel riders to enjoy both fast off-road routes on gravel roads and forest tracks as well as relaxed exploration tours.

Things become especially enjoyable on the E-Bike Culinary Tour, where visitors can easily explore the region by rented e-bikes while stopping along the way to sample traditional Pinzgau delicacies.

Award for Saalfelden Leogang: UN Tourism & FIA Award for Excellence in Sustainable Sports Tourism

In Saalfelden Leogang, top-level mountain biking meets sustainability – internationally recognized. At the first UN Tourism & FIA Awards for Excellence in Sustainable Sports Tourism 2025, the region won the category “Innovation in Sports Tourism Development,” standing out against finalists from around the world. With the project “Nature-Driven Performance: Saalfelden Leogang as a Pioneer in Eco-Friendly Mountain Bike Tourism,” the region demonstrates how sports tourism and environmental protection go hand in hand – from sustainable trail building and energy-efficient mountain lifts to initiatives that promote nature and wildlife conservation. The award is a great honor for the destination and a thank you to all partners and dedicated people who are shaping this sustainable path together.

Simply hiking: new Steinalm, Cinema of Nature and alpaca hikes

In Saalfelden Leogang, the motto is simple: “Simply hike.” No complications – just step outside and enjoy nature. The region offers an extensive network of hiking trails, including the long-distance routes Pinzga’ Hatscha, the Saalachtal High Trail and the Saalachtal Circular Trail, as well as the mindfulness trail Forest Bathing on the Asitz. Around lake Ritzensee, an agricultural themed trail provides insights into the world of farming through informative display boards. Another exciting experience is the Nature & Climate in Transition hike, which shows visitors how nature is changing, encourages discussion and also offers hope for the future.

Additional opportunities are offered by the '365 Days Active & Creative Program' with guided themed hikes. The offerings include, for example, herbal-, torchlight-, and alpaca- hikes. Along many hiking routes, special installations invite visitors to take a break – including 360-degree wooden benches and hand-forged forest swings. At stick-sharing stations, hikers can borrow a walking stick.

For a particularly impressive panorama, visitors should head to the Cinema of Nature on the summit of the Sonnkogel on the Asitz. This panorama cinema features wooden lounging islands and hammock platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

The Cinema of Nature can be reached via the Asitzbahn cable car, the Steinbergbahn cable car, via Leo’s hiking adventure trail, or along the TONspur Island Trail on the Asitz.

There is also a comeback to celebrate: the hut Steinalm has been completely rebuilt and now shines in new splendour, offering more space and modern comfort. The hike to the Steinalm is one of the most popular family hikes in the region.

Hiking without luggage and overnight stays in mountain huts

Anyone planning a long-distance hike in Saalfelden Leogang does not have to carry a heavy backpack. The “hiking without luggage” service allows hikers to set off with only a light daypack, while larger luggage is transported to the next stage destination. This is perfectly combined with an overnight stay in a mountain hut such as the Passauer Hütte, Peter-Wiechenthaler-Hütte or the newly renovated Riemannhaus.

Dedicated hikers can also earn a special award through the Hiking Pass Challenge, receiving a bronze, silver or gold hiking badge. The hiking pass is available at the tourist offices or digitally via the SummitLynx app.

Steinberge alpine sports region: climbing routes, via ferratas and climbing gyms

The Steinberge alpine sports region offers countless opportunities to climb high above the valley floor. In total, there are more than 1,000 climbing routes and alpine multi-pitch climbs suitable for beginners, advanced climbers and experienced mountaineers. The region includes Saalfelden Leogang, the Salzburger Saalachtal and the Pillerseetal, with the Loferer Steinberge mountain range, the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range and the Steinplatte forming some of the most important climbing areas. Visitors can choose from twelve via ferratas set within breathtaking mountain scenery. For rainy days there are five indoor climbing gyms. One of the longest climbing routes in the Northern Limestone Alps is the “Pinzgawurm”, featuring 45 pitches – a real challenge even for experienced climbers.

Coolcation: where visitors can cool down

On hot summer days, a refreshing break after hiking, cycling or climbing is essential. Saalfelden Leogang offers many beautiful places to cool down. One of them is the Birnbachloch, a karst spring located near the Birnbach Glacier. Another refreshing spot is the Stoissengraben, where the cool mountain waters of the Buchweißbach flow through rocky formations and end in a picturesque waterfall. Of course, there is also lake Ritzensee, one of the region’s favourite summer spots. On the Asitz, the peaceful waters area invites visitors to experience Kneipp therapy, while the Forest Bathing trail focuses on mindfulness and relaxation in the shade of the forest. The dense forests along many trails also offer natural shade for hikers and bikers, providing a welcome escape from the summer heat. Whether it’s a refreshing glacier breeze, bubbling waterfalls or peaceful forest bathing, Saalfelden Leogang is the perfect destination for a coolcation.

Golf with Alpine views and a “wow” factor

Teeing off against a spectacular mountain backdrop: in Saalfelden Leogang, two special 18-hole golf courses invite visitors to enjoy an unforgettable golfing experience. Located between Saalfelden and Maria Alm, the Urslautal golf course features a 5,000-square-metre driving range and two golf academies. At Golfclub Gut Brandlhof, players must cross the Saalach mountain river six times while enjoying magnificent views of the Steinernes Meer plateau and the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range. Dogs are also welcome here and may even join as a flight partner. For those who want to perfect their swing even in bad weather, the Indoor Golf Performance Center at Hotel Gut Brandlhof offers excellent training conditions, including a modern golf simulator.

High-speed adventures: Flying Fox XXL and summer toboggan runs

For adrenaline lovers, a ride on the Flying Fox XXL is a must. Being one of the longest and fastest steel-cable zip lines in the world, it allows riders to soar head-first through the air for 1,600 metres at speeds of up to 130 km/h. The attraction is suitable for the whole family, and children aged 10 and above may participate with parental permission. Another exciting experience is the summer toboggan run on the Biberg in Saalfelden, stretching 1.6 kilometres, as well as Leo’s Sound Toboggan Run at 1,800 metres above sea level on the Asitz.

Family adventures on the Asitz: Senses Park, barefoot trail and Peaceful Water

The Asitz is one of the most popular destinations for families in Saalfelden Leogang. At the middle station of the “Mountain of the Senses”, visitors will find the adventurous Senses Park, a varied parcours that invites both children and adults to explore a fascinating world of sensory experiences. Numerous playful and interactive stations await visitors: listening stations sharpen the sense of hearing in the forest, while the scents of alpine herbs and wild plants stimulate the sense of smell. Attentive visitors may even discover the delicate edelweiss. For relaxation, the peaceful waters area offers comfortable loungers, viewing terraces and floating platforms on the water. At the nearby Stöcklalm restaurant at the middle station of the Asitzbahn cable car, guests can enjoy delicious culinary treats – including an irresistible Kaiserschmarrn.

Summer for the ears: Jazzfestival Saalfelden, TONspuren on the Asitz, ALM:KULTUR and Suma Hoagascht

From August 20 to 23, 2026, the 46th Jazzfestival Saalfelden will take place. This year’s commissioned composition for the festival opening was awarded to the Austrian saxophonist Yvonne Moriel. Audiences can also look forward to international acts such as the Chicago Underground Duo (Rob Mazurek & Chad Taylor), presenting their latest album “Hyperglyph”, which was named one of the Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2025 by the New York Times. Another highlight is the return of Yeah NO, a legendary ensemble from the New York jazz and new music scene. A special cultural experience awaits hikers every Friday between July 10 and September 4, 2026. Under the motto “Tradition meets modernity”, artists and cultural creators perform at alpine huts as part of the extraordinary event series ALM:KULTUR. The programme includes free concerts and participatory workshops. On five Thursdays between June 25 and August 6, 2026, the concert series TONspuren on the Asitz features bands and musicians from various genres. Performers include HojsaHojsaKoschelu, Anna Buchegger & Band, Hawaiian Project, Hanke Brothers and Kathrin & Werner Unterlercher & Combo. In good weather, the concerts take place on the outdoor stage at the foot of the Großer Asitz, offering a picturesque sunset atmosphere. In case of bad weather, the concerts move to AsitzBräu.

Those who miss the concerts can still enjoy the music afterwards: along a hiking trail on the Asitz, five TONspur Islands invite visitors to listen to live recordings of past TONspuren concerts. Following its successful premiere last year, the event series “Suma Hoagascht Leogang” will also return. On warm summer evenings, visitors can enjoy music, regional food and relaxed conversations – a traditional “Hoagascht”, meaning a friendly gathering and chat. The theatre group ecce, an independent ensemble of theatre artists from Salzburg, is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the theatre autumn in Saalfelden Leogang from October 16 to 31. With the program focus on 'Transformations,' they respond to times of change and aim to explore, through wonderful stories, the potential inherent in transformations.

Kunsthaus Nexus: culture for all ages

The Kunsthaus Nexus once again presents an extensive programme for visitors of all ages. The cultural centre is an important part of the Pinzgau arts and culture scene. The programme includes concerts, a children’s theatre called Gschnagga Theatre, art-house cinema screenings as well as numerous literary readings and cabaret performances. In March, the exhibition “States of Becoming – Collection Cserni: Art from Austria” opens, featuring works by artists including Herbert Brandl, Franz Cserni and Karl Karner.

Travelling through time in museums: Mining and Gothic Museum, Leogang Show Mine and Schloss Ritzen

A worthwhile excursion is the Mining and Gothic Museum Leogang. The exhibition offers fascinating insights into the heyday of mining in Leogang. The museum also houses sacred art, including the famous “Beautiful Madonna”, a Gothic statue of a saint dating back to 1410. The special exhibition “Miner. Bishop. Emperor. – The Power of Mining between the Middle Ages and the Modern Era” will be on display until October 31, 2026. It presents original artefacts from the time of the 1525 rebellion and sheds light on the uprisings of farmers and miners from the Archbishopric of Salzburg and the Princely County of Tyrol. Those who want to explore the world of historic miners even more closely should visit the Leogang show mine. Guided tours lead visitors through narrow tunnels and a complex underground mine system. A mine railway, which once transported miners and ore, now takes younger visitors through an artificially created tunnel. Tours of the show mine are offered from May to October, and visitors should wear sturdy footwear and warm clothing. Another museum highlight is Schloss Ritzen in Saalfelden, which houses Austria’s largest and most significant nativity scene collection as well as numerous sacred artefacts. In addition to the baroque church nativity scene, visitors can also admire an oriental nativity scene and the Saalfelden nativity scene created by the famous nativity artist Alexander “Xandi” Schläffer.

Regionality and sustainability: from organic products to saffron and Misssi ice cream

The region of Saalfelden Leogang places great importance on regional value creation and resource-conscious practices. Around 70 percent of all farms in Saalfelden Leogang are certified organic farms. Organic sausage and meat products as well as other regional specialties such as cheese, yoghurt, jams and juices are produced locally and carry official certification. The special quality label “ECHT.GSUND.GUAD.” makes the high quality of local products immediately recognisable. In recent years, many farm shops have opened in the region, inviting visitors to taste local delicacies and purchase them to take home. At the Stechaubauer organic farm, fresh organic vegetables are available around the clock from a self-service vending machine with touchscreen access.

A very special regional product is Leogang saffron, cultivated by the Wölfler family and supplied to the region’s award-winning restaurants. The Dorfladen Leogang and the Saalachtal farmers’ shop in Saalfelden offer a wide selection of regional products and handcrafted souvenirs. From April to October, a weekly market takes place in Saalfelden every Friday. Visitors can buy fresh vegetables, high-quality meat and fish products, organic honey, dumplings and many other regional specialties. And how about the most delicious ice cream in the Alps? Misssi produces ice cream from natural regional ingredients and organic milk from horned cows. Particularly popular are dessert-inspired varieties such as apple strudel, punch cake and Mozart cake.
