MUSIC, CULTURE AND TRADITIONS IN SAALFELDEN LEOGANG

Jazzfestival, ALM:KULTUR and TONspur-concerts for a vibrant holiday

Whether on an alpine hut, in the forest, by the lake or in a traditional concert hall – Saalfelden Leogang stands for music and cultural enjoyment in all its forms. From the Jazzfestival Saalfelden to the TONspuren concerts and ALM:KULTUR, there is always something to hear and experience. Numerous theatre and concert performances at the Kunsthaus Nexus, new special exhibitions at the Mining and Gothic Museum Leogang and the Museum Schloss Ritzen, as well as the newly designed art hiking trail, complete the cultural offering. Other highlights include the traditional mountain bonfires for the summer solstice and the Bauernherbst festival, which celebrates regional traditions, customs and traditional crafts.

Summer of music: Jazzfestival Saalfelden, “TONspuren am Asitz”, ALM:KULTUR and Suma Hoagascht

From 20 to 23 August 2026, the 46th edition of the Jazzfestival Saalfelden will take place. Austrian saxophonist Yvonne Moriel has been commissioned to create the opening composition for this year’s festival. Fans can also look forward to international acts such as the Chicago Underground Duo (Rob Mazurek & Chad Taylor), who will present their current album Hyperglyph, named among the top 10 jazz albums of 2025 by the New York Times. In addition, the legendary formation Yeah No returns to the stage.

Another highlight awaits hikers every Friday between 10 July and 4 September 2026. Under the motto “Tradition meets modernity”, artists and cultural creators perform at alpine huts. The unique event series ALM:KULTUR features free concerts and interactive workshops of all kinds.

On five Thursdays, from 25 June to 6 August 2026, bands and musicians from various genres perform as part of the “TONspuren am Asitz” concert series. Artists include HojsaHojsaKoschelu, Anna Buchegger & Band, Hawaiian Project, Hanke Brothers and Kathrin & Werner Unterlercher & Combo. In good weather, concerts take place at sunset on the outdoor stage at the foot of the Großer Asitz summit. In case of bad weather, the venue shifts to the AsitzBräu.

Those who miss the concerts can still enjoy the music later: a hiking trail on the Asitz features five TONspur islands, where live recordings of past concerts can be experienced. Following its successful debut last year, the event series “Suma Hoagascht Leogang” returns. On warm summer evenings, visitors can enjoy music and regional food while coming together for a relaxed “Hoagascht” – a traditional gathering for conversation.

Kunsthaus Nexus: concerts, cinema and theatre

The Kunsthaus Nexus once again presents a diverse cultural programme this year, making it an essential part of the Pinzgau arts and culture scene. Visitors can look forward to numerous concerts, children’s theatre, an arthouse cinema programme, as well as a wide range of literary readings and cabaret performances.

10th Theatre Autumn Saalfelden Leogang

From 16 to 31 October, the independent Salzburg-based theatre group Theater ecce celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Theatre Autumn in Saalfelden Leogang. Under the programme focus “Transformations”, the group reflects on times of change and explores, through compelling stories, the potential that lies within transformation.

Cultural Association FREIRAUM: art hiking trail, landscape photography and chamber music

The Cultural Association FREIRAUM, together with the Leoganger Bergbahnen cable car company, supports both traditional and contemporary culture in the region and provides artists with a platform to develop their work. One of its projects is the annually redesigned art hiking trail on the Asitz.

Starting just below the top station of the Asitz cable cars, a scenic forest path leads to the Senses Park at the mid-station. This year’s exhibition, “Light and Shadow – A photographic journey around the world through the eyes of freestyle snowboarder and nature enthusiast Stefan Gimpl”, is on display. The art hiking trail opens on 21 June.

Another highlight organised by the Cultural Association FREIRAUM is the “Chamber Music Festival” event, which takes place at the Mining and Gothic Museum Leogang at the beginning of November.

A journey through time in museums: Mining and Gothic Museum, show mine and Schloss Ritzen

A recommended excursion is the Mining and Gothic Museum Leogang, where visitors gain insight into the golden age of mining in Leogang. The museum also houses sacred art, including the “Beautiful Madonna”, a Gothic sculpture dating from 1410. The museum hosts annual special exhibitions. One of them, “Miner. Bishop. Emperor. – The power of mining between the Middle Ages and the early modern period”, runs from 11 May to 31 October. It features original objects from the time of the 1525 rebellion, illustrating the background of the uprisings by farmers and miners of the Archbishopric of Salzburg and the County of Tyrol. Exhibits include Saint Catherine from the looted Neustift monastery, the famous portrait of Salzburg’s Archbishop Matthäus Cardinal Lang von Wellenburg and the crossbow of Emperor Maximilian I. Further exhibitions include “Masterpieces of Furniture Art – Salzburg 1450–1500” and “The Early Archbishopric of Salzburg – The Art of Romanesque”.

Those wishing to follow the footsteps of historic miners should visit the show mine Leogang. Guided tours lead through narrow tunnels and extensive passageways. A mine train, once used to transport miners and ore, now takes younger visitors through an artificial tunnel. Tours are offered from May to October, and sturdy footwear and warm clothing are recommended. Afterwards, the traditional Knappenstube restaurant invites guests to enjoy regional specialities.

Another museum highlight is the historic Museum Schloss Ritzen in Saalfelden, home to Austria’s largest and most significant nativity scene collection as well as important sacred artefacts. Alongside a baroque nativity scene, visitors can also discover an oriental large-scale nativity and the Saalfelden nativity created by the renowned nativity builder Alexander “Xandi” Schläffer.

A hike to the hermitage “Einsiedelei Saalfelden” is also not to be missed. It is one of the last inhabited hermitages in Europe and offers impressive views over Saalfelden Leogang.

Summer solstice: mystical alpine spectacle with mountain bonfires

The mountain bonfires at the summer solstice in June are an ancient tradition dating back to the 12th century. On 20 June 2026, fires will once again be lit across the Pinzgau mountains to ward off evil spirits and bring growth and fertility to fields and meadows. As night falls, the outlines of the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range and the Steinernes Meer plateau begin to glow, while impressive symbols and patterns appear along the mountain slopes.

Traditional harvest festival season “Bauernherbst”: from culinary to the stretch dirndl

It is the golden season of the year when the “Bauernherbst” is celebrated in Saalfelden Leogang with a variety of events. From the end of August to the end of October, the focus is on traditions, customs, traditional crafts and regional cuisine. Visitors have the opportunity to experience authentic rural life through craft demonstrations, guided hikes, cooking courses, harvest festivals, cattle drives and traditional events.

Those wishing to wear the appropriate outfit for traditional occasions should visit a small traditional costume manufactory in Saalfelden. Here, dirndls are handmade by seamstress Regina Wienerroither, who has over 30 years of experience. She is also the inventor of the stretch dirndl – a unique design made from fabrics with stretch content, including loden, linen and printed cotton.

“Saalfeldener Holzmusi”: traditional music with wooden instruments shaped like mythical creatures and animals

A unique musical experience is the “Saalfeldener Holzmusi”, which can be encountered at traditional festivals and weddings. What makes it special: only instruments made of wood are used, many of them crafted in the shape of mythical creatures and animals.

The musicians perform, for example, with wooden instruments shaped like snakes or dragons and wear traditional outfits consisting of leather knee-breeches, light blue stockings, a red waistcoat and a black hat decorated with red and white feathers. The artists play traditional folk music entirely without sheet music.

Hairy championships: Austrian Beard Championship in Leogang

Perfectly styled: on 19 September 2026, the Austrian Beard Championship will take place in Leogang. Winners are chosen in categories including moustaches, chin and cheek beards, as well as full beards. The elaborate facial hairstyles can be admired at the Alte Schmiede restaurant at the Asitz.
