A Look Behind the Scenes of the Bonfire Tradition and Festivities You Shouldn’t Miss

As dusk settles over the Saalfelden valley and the first flames begin to flicker along the mountain ridges, one of the most spectacular nights of the year begins in Saalfelden Leogang.

On the occasion of the summer solstice on June 20, 2026, countless bonfires transform the mountains surrounding the Steinernes Meer and the Leogang Steinberge into a glowing work of art.

For generations, this remarkable tradition has been kept alive by local associations, volunteers, and dedicated individuals who passionately preserve the custom of mountain bonfires. Whether at the atmospheric Summer Solstice Festival at Lake Ritzensee or high up on the Asitz mountain with its breathtaking 360-degree panorama, visitors can look forward to a unique natural spectacle accompanied by regional cuisine, music, and genuine Pinzgau hospitality.

When Fire Tells Stories

Fire has fascinated people for centuries. It symbolizes warmth, community, and new beginnings. During the summer solstice, this ancient symbol takes on a special significance. In Saalfelden Leogang, the tradition becomes visible in an extraordinary way: intricate fire images are created along the mountain ridges, lit by members of local organizations such as the fire brigade, Alpine Club, mountain rescue service, and Naturefriends.

Where steep slopes and rugged rocks dominate the landscape during the day, glowing symbols, lines, and figures suddenly illuminate the night sky after dark. From the valley, the sight is truly impressive.

One particularly iconic landmark is the famous edelweiss in the Schneegrube basin of the Steinernes Meer. For around 70 years, the Saalfelden Fire Brigade has illuminated this symbol using approximately 800 torches. At an elevation of more than 2,000 metres, and depending on snow conditions, an edelweiss measuring up to 180 metres across takes shape. At exactly 10:00 p.m., three red signal flares launched from the valley give the cue. Moments later, the mountains are ablaze with light.

A Tradition with Centuries of History

The origins of summer solstice bonfires date back to the 12th century. According to folk belief, the fires possessed protective powers: they were thought to ward off evil spirits, keep storms at bay, and bring fertility to the fields. In Saalfelden, the fires were first organized in 1931. Young men from the local gymnastics club “Körner” carried wood to the mountain peaks, laying the foundation for a tradition that continues to unite generations today. What once emerged from faith and folklore has become a powerful expression of community spirit and regional identity.

Summer Solstice Festival at Lake Ritzensee: A Summer Evening with a Special Atmosphere

Lake Ritzensee is one of the most beautiful places in the region to experience the summer solstice bonfires in a relaxed setting. As the sun slowly disappears behind the mountains and darkness settles over the valley, the first flames reflect on the water, creating a truly magical atmosphere. A special role is played by the Saalfelden Fire Brigade Youth Group, which traditionally arranges the current year’s number along the lakeshore.

The musical accompaniment is provided by a small ensemble of the Eisenbahner Stadtkapelle Saalfelden brass band. Guests can also enjoy regional delicacies and a cosy summer evening for the whole family.

From 7:30 p.m.: Live music by a small ensemble of the Eisenbahner Stadtkapelle Saalfelden

Summer Solstice Bonfires on the Asitz: A Mountain Summer Above the Clouds

Another unforgettable experience awaits visitors on the Asitz mountain in Leogang. The Asitz cable car operates continuously throughout the evening, making it easy for night owls to return to the valley after the festivities. Those wishing to enjoy the spectacle from above can take a leisurely 20–30-minute hike from the upper cable car station to the summit of the “Kleiner Asitz” (1,870 m).

At the top, a breathtaking 360-degree panorama awaits. Traditional summer solstice bonfires can be seen across Salzburg and Tyrol, creating an unforgettable mountain experience and panoramic view.

There is plenty to enjoy away from the summit as well. The rustic AsitzBräu mountain restaurant offers food, drinks, and entertainment, while the band “Die Wilden Kaiser” provides live music. Visitors can also indulge in a variety of culinary highlights from the à la carte menu.
