A challenging tour via the Tauernradweg to Salzburg, through Berchtesgadenerland, back to Saalfelden.
Around 151 kilometers and roughly 1,500 meters of elevation gain make this Saalfelden-to-Salzburg loop a real endurance ride—challenging, yet with many scenic highlights. The starting point is Saalfelden, from where you follow the Tauernradweg toward Lofer. From there, you ride along the Saalach through Unken to Schneizlreuth—a varied mix of gravel paths and quiet bike trails, largely away from main roads.
Continuing via Unterjettenberg, the route follows the Saalachsee to Bad Reichenhall, then downstream to the mouth of the Saalach into the Salzach. The subsequent section through Salzburg is a highlight: along the Salzach-Kais, past the old town and fortress, then along the Hellbrunner Allee toward St. Leonhard. There you follow the Berchtesgadener Ache into the valley before the climb begins—through Berchtesgaden, Ramsau, on to the picturesque Hintersee.
The final, challenging ascent leads to the Hirschbichlpass, where you cross the border back into Austria. At the top, a well-deserved rest awaits before a fast asphalt descent down to Weißbach and, finally, the Tauernradweg back to Saalfelden.
