Thousand Leaves

Japan, Greece

Masahiko Satoh - piano thou
Giotis Damianidis - guitar

A thousand swirling, rustling leaves falling on sound compost, sometimes eerily calm, often exciting and wild. The 84-year-old Japanese pianist, who recorded with Albert Mangelsdorff in the early 1970s or composed psychedelic music for an anime film and later not only for a choir of 1000 Buddhist monks, but also arranged standards for Helen Merrill or Nancy Wilson, meets a Belgian-Greek guitar-Avantgardist who grew up with punk, played for years in Fela Kuti's guitarist's band and celebrates free jazz. Their first concert together at the Jazz Spot Candy in Chiba, Japan, from 2024 is called "Thousand Leaves", which could refer to the "Manyoshu", the oldest collection of Japanese poetry or a metal band from Tokyo and orbits somewhere in their intersection.
