Marta Sanchez Quintet „Before the Bloom“
USA
Alex LoRe - alto sax
Roman Filiu - tenor sax
Marta Sanchez - piano
Kanoa Mendelhall - bass
Mark Whitfield Jr - drums
guest: Cuong Vu - trumpet
As nature begins to prepare for its imminent withering, this quintet truly comes into full bloom in Saalfelden. Shortly after her move from Madrid to New York in 2011—facilitated by a Fulbright scholarship—Marta Sanchez founded her quintet, which for this evening even trumpeter Cuong Vu. A pianist of stunning prolificacy as a composer—“Rising Star” of Downbeat’s critics’ poll in 2025 and also known for her work alongside David Murray—Sanchez recently told JazzTimes magazine how much she loves melodies, but that “harmony is just as important. If you put a melody that’s beautiful but predictable over a harmony that’s darker and unexpected, the musical power shifts to the harmony. And that’s when the piece becomes interesting.” There are indeed autumn bloomers that can be planted in August.
