Marta Sanchez "For The Space You Left"

Marta Sanchez – piano
Madrid-born, Brooklyn-based pianist Marta Sanchez describes playing solo piano as a "long standing fear". After acclaimed ensemble albums, e.g. with Ambrose Akinmusire or in her trio with Chris Tordini and Savannah Harris, her solo album "For The Space You Left" was released this year. "Creating a solo project felt like the most direct way to face that fear – and grow through it," she explains. The pieces, written during a McDowell residency in a snow-stormy cabin and honed in pandemic isolation, played on a (mostly) discreetly prepared piano, captivate with irritatingly comforting rhythms and (dis)harmony, which already resonate in song titles such as "Frost Bloom" or "Echolord".
