Saalfelden Leogang: Nostalgia Ski Day in Perfect Spring Snow Conditions

Under ideal conditions, the Schanteilift in Leogang once again turned into a stage for historic skiing last weekend.

Around 60 participants from several nations followed the invitation of the Saalfelden Leogang region and the ANNO 1900 association, creating an atmospheric journey back in time at the Nostalgia Ski Day.

At the heart of the event was a giant slalom race with two runs, where historic wooden skis – both with and without metal edges – and authentic clothing from the period up to around 1970 created a very special racing atmosphere. A total of 61 starters were registered. In addition to numerous participants from Austria – particularly from the very active Leogang-based association ANNO 1900 – guests from Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany and Switzerland also took part.

Exciting Decisions in the Categories

The dedicated Leogang association ANNO 1900 dominated the competition at their home event. In four out of the five categories, athletes from the Pinzgau region set the pace. In the women’s category on wooden skis without edges, Claudia Weitlaner (AUT, ANNO 1900) claimed victory with a time of 1:32.07 minutes, followed by Mojca Križ from Slovenia and Erni Ortner (AUT). In the men’s category without edges, Erich Untermoser (AUT, ANNO 1900) won with a total time of 1:25.30 minutes. Ludek Vystyd from the Czech Republic and Stefan Madreiter (AUT) finished in second and third place. In the women’s category on wooden skis with edges, Tanja Untermoser (AUT, ANNO 1900) dominated, recording the fastest time in her class with 1:21.39 minutes. Stefanie Hutter (AUT) and Maria Grundner (AUT, ANNO 1900) completed the podium. The “Modern Oldies” category also saw a race for the fastest time: Alexander Hahn (AUT, ANNO 1900) took the win ahead of Timon Leitner (AUT) and Lukas Brennsteiner (AUT). Only in the highly competitive men’s category with edges did the victory go outside the Pinzgau region. Danijel Stropnik from Slovenia won with a time of 1:14.62 minutes, narrowly ahead of Josef Seiwald and Anton Herzog (both AUT, ANNO 1900).

Consistency as a Special Challenge

In addition to the classic individual ranking, consistency also played an important role. Participants aimed to repeat their time from the first run as precisely as possible. Luca Adacker (AUT, NostalSki-Team Mürzzuschlag) demonstrated the greatest precision: his two runs differed by only one hundredth of a second – a result that is hard to beat. Lukas Brennsteiner and Erni Ortner also showed a strong sense of pace and rhythm on the historic skis with minimal time differences. In terms of the best average time, Alfred Erlacher – also from ANNO 1900 – came out on top. The nostalgia youth category also had its moment, with Christoph Aberger taking the win.

Community and Nostalgia at the Heart of the Event

Alongside the sporting competition, tradition and camaraderie were at the center of the Nostalgia Ski Day in Saalfelden Leogang. With great attention to detail, participants presented their historic ski equipment – from classic wooden skis and old leather boots to original outfits from past decades. With warm spring temperatures, the traditional “Firnfest” (spring snow celebration) that followed truly lived up to its name.
