ONE TICKET – TWO HOLIDAYS

Austrian tourism destinations launch joint initiative for climate-friendly travel

When tourism regions work together, innovative solutions to future challenges can emerge. This is precisely the approach behind the new initiative “One Ticket – Two Holidays”. Several tourism destinations awarded the Austrian Ecolabel have joined forces to encourage guests to travel by train and bus and to make sustainable mobility a positive and rewarding experience.

The participating regions include Ausseerland Salzkammergut, Saalfelden Leogang, Seefeld, Wagrain-Kleinarl, Wildschönau and Zell am See-Kaprun. Together, they represent a new form of cross-destination cooperation in Austrian tourism.

At the heart of the initiative is a simple message: guests who arrive by public transport are rewarded. Visitors travelling to one of the participating regions for their summer holiday by public transport can submit proof of their journey online and enter a draw for an additional winter holiday in another partner destination. This positions the journey itself not as a limitation, but as a conscious choice in favour of an environmentally friendly way of travelling.

The initiative pursues several goals: reducing travel-related emissions in tourism, raising awareness of public transport options, and demonstrating that comfortable travel to tourism regions is possible without relying on a private car. At the same time, the cooperation generates valuable insights into mobility behaviour and the effectiveness of new incentive systems.

A particularly remarkable aspect of the initiative is the form of cooperation. Destinations that normally pursue their own individual strategies are deliberately joining forces on this topic, focusing on collaboration, knowledge sharing and mutual support. By placing the shared goal of sustainable tourism development above individual interests, they are creating a visible example across Austria of how cooperation can contribute to addressing societal challenges. The initiative demonstrates that future-oriented topics such as mobility, climate protection and sustainable tourism can only be advanced effectively through joint efforts.

The technical implementation, project management and communication are handled by Vionmo and New Standard Studio.

VCÖ Mobility Award nomination

The quality and innovative strength of the project were recognised at an early stage: “One Ticket – Two Holidays” has been nominated for the VCÖ Mobility Award 2026. The initiative is therefore among those projects that demonstrate how mobility management, climate protection and tourism can successfully be combined.

The nomination confirms the project’s approach of promoting sustainable mobility not through restrictions or prohibitions, but through positive incentives, cooperation and attractive holiday experiences. It also recognises the courage of the participating destinations to develop new solutions for the mobility of the future together across regional boundaries.

Austrian Ecolabel as a common foundation

A key feature of the initiative is that all six participating destinations are certified with the Austrian Ecolabel for Tourism Destinations. This officially recognised quality seal stands for demonstrably sustainable tourism development and requires destinations to continuously implement and further develop measures in areas such as mobility, climate protection, nature and resource conservation, and regional value creation.

“One Ticket – Two Holidays” makes this shared responsibility visible and demonstrates how certified destinations are not only pursuing their sustainability goals within their own regions, but are also creating impact across Austria through concrete cooperation. The initiative is therefore a strong example of how the Austrian Ecolabel can serve as a quality and innovation network, fostering sustainable solutions for the future of tourism.
