Art Trail at Asitz 2025

Retrospective “WELTBILDER” by Anton Thuswaldner

A legacy of mysticism, critique, and reality

For the 11th time, the cultural association FREIRAUM and the Leoganger Bergbahnen invite visitors to hike, marvel, and reflect. Framed by the breathtaking mountain landscape of Saalfelden Leogang, this year’s exhibition is titled “WELTBILDER”, a comprehensive retrospective of the internationally acclaimed artist Anton Thuswaldner (1929–2021), who was born in Kaprun.

The sculptor, painter, and draftsman left behind a powerful artistic legacy. His works are known for their contradictions, doubts—and their ability to awaken. There is something mystical about Thuswaldner’s art: numeric and alphabetic codes, hidden messages, and complex symbols play central roles. These visual ciphers invite viewers to engage with themes such as freedom, time, reality, and silence.

“Anton Thuswaldner’s work opens up spaces for questions. They warn without preaching. They invite without imposing,” says Martina Riedlsperger, chairwoman of the FREIRAUM cultural association. “This exhibition is not only a tribute to his artistic legacy, but also an impulse to rethink the present.”

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, the 11th edition of the Art Trail at Asitz was officially opened—marking another milestone in Saalfelden Leogang’s cultural engagement. Numerous guests, art enthusiasts, and companions gathered to celebrate the life’s work of Anton Thuswaldner and the launch of this year’s exhibition.

With the Art Trail, FREIRAUM and Leoganger Bergbahnen have created a unique platform: a place of encounter between nature and art, between past and present. Every year, this initiative makes both new and established culture tangible. The awe-inspiring mountain scenery of the Asitz offers more than just a view—it becomes part of the exhibition itself. The initiative serves as an open invitation: for artists to present their work in the open air, and for visitors to engage in a conscious, unhurried dialogue with art and nature.

The 2025 Art Trail begins just below the Asitzbahn mountain station and follows the path along the “Silent Waters at Asitz” to the Senses Park at the mid-station. Every 30 to 40 meters, visitors encounter a new artwork—each a moment to pause, discover, and reflect. The exhibition is open to the public from June 1 until early to mid-October 2025.

For more than a decade, the Art Trail at Asitz has united nature and culture in a truly unique way—creating a stage for both regional and international artists. With “WELTBILDER” by Anton Thuswaldner, the 2025 edition turns its focus to the multifaceted work of an extraordinary artist—offering a trail that moves and inspires.
