Sheen Trio “Transitory”

Iran, Germany

Shabnam Parvaresh - bass clarinet, clarinet, FX
Ula Martyn-Ellis - guitar
Philipp Buck - drums

"Sheen" represents the sixteenth letter of the Persian alphabet, the initial of Shabnam Parvaresh: a clarinetist, curator, artist, and bandleader born in Tehran and based in Osnabrück. As evocatively ambiguous—indeed, as "transitory"—as the title of their current album suggests, the Sheen Trio, according to Hans-Dieter Grünefeld in Sonic magazine, "blends avant-garde, romanticism, and folk into an unmistakable sound," performing "electrifying, experimental jazz" (Rolf Thomas, Jazz thing) or "tension-filled post-rock" (Jan Paersch). Embracing the constant flux that defines our reality, the instrumental narratives of these three musicians explore themes ranging from poor internet connections in the 1990s to struggles for freedom in Iran—at times dynamically wriggling out of a "Cocoon," at others drifting melancholically in "Maroggia," or surging with intensity in "Unexpected Rock."
