“WAS___” marks the beginning of a ten-year interdisciplinary journey through space and sound by MMM (Maja Osojnik, Mathia*s Lenz, and Matija Schellander), starting with the first 66 meters of a graphic score. The project explores how a visual score can be understood as an open, multimodal system and translated into different artistic formats. At its core lies the question of the “original” and the possible transfers between image, sound, performance, and space.

Over the next decade, the score polymorphically documents traces of time, inscribing them into itself while developing sonic and visual structures that invite audiences to think about music beyond the traditional notation system. Linocut, cyanotype, acetone, and other printing techniques weave the score through the space in manifold forms. As a long strip, it resembles magnetic tape and also works with the same medium. The tapes are integrated into its design and fragmentarily interpret and accompany sections of the graphic score. Tape reels, tape heads, and speakers invite the audience to actively participate.

At its center, the work leaves room for immersive sound installations and performances in which MMM, together with percussionist Špela Mastnak, explore the phenomenon of skin — as a sensory field of touch and perception — acoustically and haptically: through touching, pressing, scratching, or deforming materials such as paper, balloons, or foil. As an interface between inside and outside, the exploration of “skin” opens up a multilayered field of experimentation in which the physical interaction with sonic materials blurs the boundaries between action and reception, creating a micro-acoustic landscape.
