Karneval der Tiere

THE CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS (in German)

Welcome to The Carnival of the Animals, the celebration of life! When the worlds of music and animals collide, nothing is left untouched! Whether lions or chickens, donkeys or turtles, everyone has turned out—even fossils have come back to life. Sing, dance, and guess along with us! Composer Camille Saint-Saëns delights the whole family with this classic hit. And yet, during his lifetime, he didn’t even want the score published! He wrote the suite in 1886 just for fun—in a small village in Austria, by the way. Saint-Saëns feared for his reputation as a “serious” composer, which is why The Carnival of the Animals wasn’t published until 1922. He couldn’t have known that this work would bring him more worldwide fame than any other. Since then, generations of children and adults have been laughing their heads off at Saint-Saëns’s original way of setting animal calls to music. For classical music buffs, he’s also hidden all sorts of ironic Easter eggs: in the elephant, for example, he quotes Berlioz, and in the fossils, Rossini. Have fun at this party!
