Henriette Eilertsen Trio “Moder”
Norway
Henriette Eilertsen - flute
Joel Ring - cello
Øystein Aarnes Vik – drums
With well over 50 million streams, the flute-centric project of an American rapper proved to be the most delightful surprise in the realm of instrumental music just over three years ago —bridging the gap between jazz and meditative mysticism. Had justice prevailed, that success would have rightfully belonged to Henriette Eilertsen. The Norwegian flutist—born in 1993, yet notably the first person in her home country to earn a jazz degree on her instrument—had already released “Poems for Flute” in 2021, and later that same year recorded “Om talmodighet” with OJKOS (Orchestra for Jazz Composers in Oslo), an ensemble she co-founded. Her trio’s debut album, “Moder” —featuring Swedish-Norwegian cellist Joel Ring and drummer Øystein Aarnes Vik—was recently released; it is a record that teaches the modern age a thing or two about the flute, ranging from gentle Lateef-ian touches (Yusef, of course) to tempestuous grooves driven by overblown tones. “One can easily imagine that "Moder" would have been a hit a thousand years ago, and that adventurous music lovers will experience it as a musical pot of gold a thousand years from now”, as a text accompanying the album aptly observes.
