Das frühe Erzstift Salzburg

In the 8th century, the roots of the archbishopric of Salzburg, which would later become one of the most significant European principalities, are established. During a time of new spiritual and cultural awakening, figures like Saints Rupert, Virgil, and Vitalis promote the development of ecclesiastical structures, the establishment of churches, and the emergence of early art and education traditions.

Starting from a rare Limoges cross from around 1250, the exhibition provides insights into this early artistic period through selected original works from the Romanesque and Early Gothic periods. Sculptures and liturgical objects reveal the religious, artistic, and social forces that contributed to the establishment of the archbishopric of Salzburg and significantly shaped its cultural identity.
