Calamity

France

Delphine Joussein - flute, fx

When storms or bark beetles ruin a harvest, the resulting damage is referred to as a “calamity.” However, what French flutist Delphine Joussein gets up to with her project “Calamity” is more likely to call to mind the name of the American gunslinger, Calamity Jane. Surprise attacks and sonic raids, executed with flute held at the ready, not only demonstrate the versatility of both instrument and performer, but also serve to rectify preconceptions about this wind instrument, which is often heard as angelic. Blowing directly into her flute, Delphine Joussein creaks, curses, sings, snorts, clicks, and pops sounds into the sonic space, weaving them amidst various electronic sound-mutants, doubling and intensifying her initial tones, but also occasionally trilling into space with sheer enchantment.
