Pinzgau Folk Museum
5760 Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer
In 1964, the market town of Saalfelden acquired Ritzen Castle with the intention of establishing a local history museum within its historic walls. In the years that followed, the building was renovated and expanded in stages, and the individual departments were designed by the museum association with a great deal of idealism and loving attention to detail. Today, the museum, one of the most important in the country, presents many valuable exhibits on the history and life of the region, areas of religious folk art, mineralogy, and geology in 24 departments. The museum presents several major themes relating to the history of Saalfelden: a large nativity scene exhibition, sacred treasures with folkloric exhibits, Roman wall and ceiling paintings from Saalfelden, and the Gottfried Salzmann exhibition. Changing special exhibitions. Opening hours: Thursday to Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
