When Shake Stew stepped onto the stage for the opening concert of the Saalfelden Jazz Festival in 2016, no one could have imagined what an extraordinary journey was about to begin. Ten years later, the unusually formed septet has become one of the defining groups of the European jazz scene. Die ZEIT called them “Austria’s jazz band of the moment,” NDR early on declared them a “cult band,” and with the Amadeus Austrian Music Award 2023 and the German Jazz Prize 2021, their international status was ultimately cemented.
Now, 2026 marks their 10th anniversary. And it wouldn’t be Shake Stew if they didn’t celebrate the occasion with a musical spectacle: “The Big Shake – A Saalfelden Homecoming” is the title of a specially assembled collaboration between Bürgermusik and Eisenbahnermusi, set to shake the center of Saalfelden with the music of Shake Stew.
The event begins at Rathausplatz, where the 70-piece formation, together with the band, will march toward the Congress venue. After another musical performance there, the celebration moves directly to the grand finale in the city park: Shake Stew will perform on stage in their usual setup, while the musicians of the two Saalfelden ensembles will play right in front of them. The band will close the evening with selected pieces from their current double album TEN ONE TWO.
