Pedro Melo Alves "HIIT"
Portugal, Italy
Simone Quatrana - piano
Andrea Grossi - double bass
Pedro Melo Alves - drums
For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror," an excerpt from Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke's Duino Elegies, lends its name to the debut of this Italian-Portuguese piano trio. A hiit with two i's, the three instrumental energizers combine the "aesthetics of improvised and composed music of the 20th and 21st centuries" with "hot blooded energy which is not afraid of lyric melody, abstract contemplation, and structured formal matrixes" – and, in addition to wildly swirling "Ecotones," doesn't shy away from quiet nuances and even a "Lament." For American cellist Hank Roberts, this album reminds him of "how effective and beautiful the trio can be, and how truly important it is to listen to the wonderfully abstract form of music."
