The Leogang show mine is open again from 6 May

A highlight for the whole family!

From May to October, mining in Saalfelden Leogang comes alive again. On the trail of the Knappen, those interested in the natural jewel Schwarzleotal can immerse themselves in the past of the Montanen estate. Guided tours of the medieval tunnels of the show mine give an insight into the hard work of the miners and their mined treasures around silver, copper, nickel and co.

As early as the 14th century in the Schwarzleograben in Saalfelden Leogang, a hand-carved system of underground tunnels led the miners to their work. Since 1989, part of the area has been accessible as a show mine, and in the summer months offers an insight into the history of one of the oldest mining sites in the country. With well-trained guides, we walk through a wide-ranging pit construction. Part stooped, part goose-stepping, the adventurous journey through narrow tunnels leads directly into the past and gives an insight into the hard work of the miners who at that time mined silver, copper, nickel, lead, cobalt and mercury here. After 3,200 years of mining history, the associated Knappenstube invites you to linger and feast.

One of the many highlights is the large playground, which offers numerous experiences for the little ones. New is the old mine railway, which has now been put back into operation. In the past, it was used to transport the mined treasures and to transport the miners. The railway now transports the youngest visitors through a new artificial tunnel, right next to the Knappenstube.

Recently, the show mine has also been accessible and virtually accessible to people for whom the show mine is too narrow or who want to visit the show mine virtually from home: Virtual Tour - Schaubergwerk Leogang (schaubergwerk-leogang.com)

Every Wednesday Children's Day!

Leo's guided tour: Hello children, I'm Leo - the mascot of the Saalfelden region Leogang! Maybe you already know me – I go hiking and biking and of course I also like to explore the mine! Every Wednesday in July and August you can take part in special guided tours for children. Starts at the Unterberghaus “Die Knappenstube”. After about 500 m you reach the “mouth hole” of the mine. It passes through narrow tunnels and over steep stairs – partly bent and in goose-stepping. On the way back there is a very special surprise waiting for the little knappen, at the so-called “Halde” the kids can try themselves as “stone diggers” – equipped with a hammer. Back at the hut, everyone can take part in the children's quiz. Each child receives a glass of skim water and a skim bun. In addition, everyone will receive a small gift and a research certificate. On this day, of course, the Grubenbahn – an original mining railway – runs.
Highlight in fine weather: at 12:30 p.m. the kids can try their hand at baking bread – as in the past when there was no supermarket and the women of the scarce baked bread for their husbands.
