SOUNDtrack III - Philharmonix

“Not everything in their programme is classical music. But everything has musical class.” (from Hompage). What they all have in common: love for classical music, an unbridled joy in playing, and the sound aesthetic and tradition of their excellent orchestras.

The ensemble was founded in 2007 by Ödön Rácz, a solo double bassist in the Vienna Philharmonic during a concert tour to Japan. Concerts and live performances are distinctive in the way they encompass a most diverse range of style directions; the 7 fantastic musicians are not only at home in classical and Viennese music, but also combine these with elements of gypsy music, Balkan folk music, klezmer, Latin jazz, and tango. They manage to combine things successfully that normally don’t belong together: in Johann Strauss’ Fledermaus overture for example after a few bars “the Third man” theme creeps in, and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” appears above Bach’s Prelude in C major…

Whether with pop, Viennese song, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, or Piazzolla, Strauss, or Bach, they have thrilled audiences and critics alike in sold-out concert halls on concert tours throughout Europe and on tours through Japan and America:

“A group of musicians that virtuosically masters all sorts of types of playing in the border areas between “E” and U”, between Brahms, Johann Strauss, Chick Corea, and American film music masters. It is breathtaking how the double bassist Ödön Racz performs “the flight of the bumblebee” at world record speed. Brilliant, the inspiringly gypsy sounds in “Ritter Pásmán’s Csardas”, “Hungarian Dances” through to Ravel’s “Tzigane”, which in its title alone announces their musical roots.” (Daily newspaper Die Presse)
