International Jazzfestival Saalfelden Town Square
Imposing mountain ridges, crystal clear air and jazz – an irresistible combination for all music and mountain lovers that has proven a success for years. The Jazz Festival Saalfelden Leogang amidst the Salzburg alpine landscape has gained an excellent reputation for contemporary and experimental jazz over the past 33 years.
On the last week of August every year now, the 16,000 who arrive in Saalfelden turn it into the hub of the jazz world for four days. The Saalfelden Jazz Festival is a fixture in the European music calendar, especially since the term “jazz” has been very freely interpreted here from the year dot. It sees itself as a platform for experimentation, for the new and unusual, and tries to programme on the cutting edge, to always show new trends and thereby displaying the complexity of jazz and its many styles.
The annual jazz festival opens on Thursday with the City Stage concerts in the Rathausplatz. With free admission, listeners can join in the four-day extravaganza, and the boisterous partying and dancing that comes with it. It continues with the Shortcuts in the Kunsthaus Nexus: the releases from the main concerts are a must for hardcore jazz fans. Therefore, it is not surprising that these are usually booked down to the last seat. Beginning on Friday, the main concerts start at the Main Stage at the Congress building in the city centre. Both big names and newcomers on the international jazz scene alike come together here every year. On Saturday and Sunday the free Almkonzerte (Outdoor Pasture Concerts) are once again on the programme held on a total of four pastures. The jazz music, combined with the breathtaking panoramic views into the valley make the pasture concerts the visual highlight of the weekend.
