Mario Steidl on Culture
The Director of the Kunsthaus Nexus/Jazz Festival Saalfelden reports
The cultural offer in Saalfelden Leogang is outstanding and varied. Above all, we must not forget that we are de facto in the country. So of course we have a very lively tradition and a mature folk culture, which are important for regional identity. On the other hand, there is also an offer that goes much further – one that I would almost call urban, and which is characterized by exceptional quality.
The fact that with the jazz festival Saalfelden Leogang was able to establish itself internationally is unique, thanks to the initiative of some young people in the 70s and now to the professional execution of the club’s Zentrum zeitgenössischer Musik (ZZM) [Association centre for contemporary music]. In its wake, the idea of a cultural centre was able to prevail. In 2002 the Kunsthaus Nexus was opened offering concerts, an art gallery, cinema, cabaret and much more.
Saalfelden Leogang as a cultural centre
This cultural work is still being enriched by of associations, such as VAUST and the Kulturforum. But Saalfelden Leogang hits the mark in many other offers with openness:
- The Mining and Gothic Museum with its collection of exhibits from the Middle Ages is truly impressive.
- The Leoganger Kinderkultur creates fantastic projects for and with children.
- And the local theatre group Ortszeit and
- the concert series Tonspuren am Asitz [Soundtracks on the Asitz] provide a high quality offer.
In the future development, I hope that people will continue to focus on quality, as is indeed the case in many projects, and not drift into the inconsequential.
