Trail running route description
Find all the excitement and relaxation you need in Austria’s most richly varied trail running paradise. Some of the best experts in the field have put together a route concept covering the entire region – from rolling hills to craggy peaks. With 18 different running routes spanning a total of more than 120 kilometres as well as two panoramic trails and one mountain running route, nothing comes between you and nature. From five starting points in Saalfelden, you can explore the small-town atmosphere and gentle hills surrounding Lake Ritzensee or head up to a tranquil forest zone with a hermitage at the foot of the Steineres Meer mountain range. The resort town of Leogang has a particularly rural and traditional flair. Traversing asphalt, gravel and forest floor, the starting point oat the Leogang swimming pool offers a true forest, stream and meadow experience through the idyllic Ullachtal and little farming settlements. The dynamic and yet traditional district of Hütten is home to one of the largest bike parks in Europe and is also the starting point for two medium difficulty runs with lots of diversity.

This loop in snot for the average runner, but for people who are already in top condition and are looking for an athletic challenge combined with a powerful experience of nature. Note: This route is not specifically marked as a run. Please follow the hiking trail signs.
During the scenic trip up the mountain on the Asitzbahn cable car, you can prepare yourself mentally for the 20-kilometre run. Start at the Alten Schmiede restaurant. Take the first turnoff, and after a brief downhill stretch and several fairly steep serpentine curves, you arrive at Schönleitenhütte. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Hohe Tauern mountains. Then take the level trail around the north side of the Wildenkarkogel hill to avoid having to run over the top. The run already includes a 500-meter altitude difference as it is. Continue along the narrow gravel path over root and rock sections in the direction of Spielbergtörl. The challenge is to be surefooted in every step, and the reward is a meditative relaxation of the mind.
Before you reach Spielbergtörl, you still have to tackle two uphill sections, occasionally calling for quite a bit of effort. When you arrive at the border of Tyrol, you can look back at the now more distant Asitz mountain and be proud of having run such a long distance in such a short time.
Then you’ll traverse some stony terrain where the marmots still whistle and head downward to the Spielbergalm huts, where you can take a little rest stop if you like. From here, a gravel path leads downhill to Unterberghaus/Knappenstube, another possible choice for a rest stop.
If you still have some energy left at that point, Schwarzleotal valley is highly recommended for running: This stretch is easy on the joints and leads you out of the valley to Hütten, then on the bike path along the Leoganger Asitzbahnen parking lot. Alternatively, you can take a taxi back from Knappenstube.
